Contested or Uncontested The Many Causes of Divorce

If you need divorce advice, you will likely have several questions to ask an attorney. When you and your spouse are in agreement about dissolving the marriage, then you may have specific questions related to an uncontested divorce. If you have children in common, then you will also want to ask questions that pertain to child custody, visitation, child support, and possibly alimony.

Couples choose to divorce for a variety of reasons. While there may be a single reason for choosing to divorce, there are usually a combination of issues present. In Norway, for example, an August 2012 study showed that when couples shared or divided household chores, they were twice as likely to become divorced than when the wife handled all of the housework.

Later that same year in November, the European Economic Review, for example, released the results of another study. It was found that when women worked an additional 12 minutes every week, they had a 1% increased chance of becoming divorced.

Couples In the United States, however, tend to seek divorce as a result of these and other issues:

  • Communication issues
  • Infidelity
  • Betrayal
  • Financial problems
  • Abuse
  • Loss of interest

It’s interesting to note that an individual’s job or career path may also be an impetus for divorce. Recent studies have shown that people in the following professions are more likely to become divorced than those within other professions:

  • Salespeople
  • Optometrists
  • Podiatrists
  • Nuclear engineers
  • Agricultural engineers

While living together before becoming married used to be considered a precursor to divorce, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a study in early 2012 that indicated this is no longer the case. The specific area where a couple lives, however, may contribute to whether or not they choose to become and/or remain married. The highest marriage and divorce rates occur in the western states. Next in line are the southern states, with the northeastern states having the lowest marriage and divorce rates.

In addition to location, divorce rates also vary for first and subsequent marriages. For first marriages, the divorce rate is roughly 41%, for second marriages, 60%, and for third marriage, 73%. It’s interesting to note that for many individuals, each subsequent marriage they enter into appears to have an increased likelihood of ending in divorce. A study conducted by Bowling Green State University also shows that the divorce rate for couples over 50 years old has actually doubled during the past 20 years.

When couples marry at an older age, have higher education levels, and experience increased earnings, they tend to remain married for longer periods of time. When these conditions aren’t in alignment, however, the chance of facing a contested or uncontested divorce tends to be higher.

If you and your spouse are planning to have an uncontested divorce, then you may have other questions and concerns. An uncontested divorce attorney may suggest mediation for child custody and make other recommendations. These and other issues can be discussed at your initial consultation.

Everyone’s seen the cliche commercials trying to convince those who have been injured to hire a personal injury attorney. After a while, these ads can put you off the idea of hiring any type of lawyer after you’ve been injured.

But forget the ambulance-chasing commercials; choosing to work with a personal injury attorney after you’ve been injured is always a smart choice. This is especially true when studies show that 22% of slip and fall injuries in the workplace result in 31 or more missed days from work. Clearly, most people can’t afford not to hire a lawyer for their personal injury. Here’s a look at three more crucial reasons why you should:

Attorneys know the legal process inside out

Most people filing personal injury lawsuits are doing so for the first time. Chances are, none of them know personal injury law as well as a professional attorney. It’s because of this that a personal injury lawyer can be a truly vital asset throughout your claim process, ensuring your claim is filed properly and getting the best possible settlement. This ultimately improves your odds and takes a huge amount of work off your hands.

Attorneys can bring your case to trial if needed

Very few personal injury cases actually make it to trial, and are instead settled out of court most of the time. If your settlement offer isn’t adequate, however, it might be wise to take the case to trial and litigate for a better settlement. This is where your personal injury lawyer will definitely come in handy. When studies show that juries are much more likely to rule against insurance companies, having an attorney representing you will let your insurance company know that you mean business.

These lawyers can help you even after your claim is settled

Did you know that many personal injury lawyers can also double as disability attorneys? Even if they can’t, they’ll likely be able to refer you to some of the best disability attorneys in your area. If your injury has caused a long-term disability, this kind of assistance will be absolutely critical ? just one more reason why personal injury lawyers can be a massive help.
